Why Renew?

On March 10th, 2020, MCC is asking voters to approve continued bond funding for Mott Community College by voting YES. A continuation of bond funding would allow MCC to pay for building renovations, capital improvements, and critical infrastructure projects.

In 2013, voters approved the same bond, which allowed MCC to invest in…

  • The Southern Lakes Branch Center in Fenton
  • The Law Enforcement Training Academy in Fenton
  • The Ballenger Field House in Flint
  • The Mott Library in Flint
  • The MCC Culinary Arts Institute in Flint
  • The Lenore Croudy Family Life Center (formerly Woodside Church)
If voters do not approve continued bond funding for MCC, the college’s ability to provide educational, economic, and workforce development opportunities and services in their current forms would be jeopardized.

FACTS ABOUT THE MCC BOND VOTE ON MARCH 10TH

What is the MCC Bond Proposal?

On March 10th, 2020, voters will be asked to consider continuing bond funding for Mott Community College. A continuation of bond funding would allow MCC to pay for building renovations, capital improvements, and other critical infrastructure projects.

Have we voted on this type of proposal from MCC before?

Yes. In both 2004 and again in 2013, voters approved bond proposals for Mott, which went to funding new buildings and renovations like the Southern Lakes Branch Center and Law Enforcement Training Academy in Fenton, the Ballenger Field House and Mott Library on MCC’s main campus in Flint, and the opening of the new MCC Culinary Arts Institute just last year.

Will this increase my taxes?

No. If approved, this continuation of bonding authority by the College would replace the current levy (which voters approved in 2013) with a new tax rate that is slightly LESS than what homeowners currently pay.

What is the current MCC bond levy on property owners?

The tax levy for MCC’s existing bonds is .82 mils (approved by voters in 2013). The new rate, if approved by voters on March 10, will be slightly LESS (at .79 mils).

Property Value Current Tax Levy per Year New Tax Levy per Year
$125,000.00 $51.25 $49.38
$100,000.00 $41.00 $39.50
$80,000.00 $32.80 $31.60
$50,000.00 $20.50 $19.75
$25,000.00 $10.25 $9.88
If approved, the new tax levy for property owners would actually be less than the current levy.

What are the benefits of having a strong community college in Flint and Genesee County?

Mott has been repeatedly recognized by the Aspen Institute as one of the Top Community Colleges in the United States (in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2021). Mott provides students with access to a high-quality education, which is both close to home and affordable.

Mott Community College provides vital job training programs to our community in growing fields where employers are looking to hire. Mott provides essential training for health care workers and others that is not available in many areas throughout the state. We cannot afford losing this essential service in our community that is training our residents for secure, good-paying careers. We need to invest in Mott so they can invest in us.

Mott is an important anchor institution within the community and has deep and longstanding ties to the City of Flint, Genesee County as a whole, and the mid-Michigan region broadly defined. Mott is very much “the community’s college!”
